Detroit News reporter George Hunter writes a story about victims complaining about the Detroit Police Department's response to non-violent crimes, such as car theft.
Heather Beatham and her fiancé, Jacob Roderick, recount that they reported their 2025 Dodge Durango stolen on August 9, a day after it was taken from spot at John R and Mack, near a city-owned building with surveillance cameras, while attending a concert at The Fillmore on Woodward Avenue in downtown Detroit.
They said they never heard back from police until The Detroit News inquired about the case.
"People should know if they go into Detroit and their car gets stolen, nothing will be done about it," Roderick, 41, of White Lake Township, tells The News. "We used to come down to Detroit all the time for baseball games, concerts. No more. ... (Detroit Police) only want accountability when the media gets involved."
Detroit Police Capt. John Stewart, commander of the department's Major Crimes Division, concedes that the video wasn't reviewed until after The News contacted the department about the case weeks later/ He said the case is being investigated.
Detroit Police Commissioner Ricardo Moore, a retired Detroit police lieutenant, said he hears similar complaints "all the time," The News reports. "It's one of our biggest problems.
